Discovering the Beauty of Sustainable Bio-Jewelry
One day I was walking on a Brazilian beach and found a store with beautiful sustainable bio-jewelry. I went inside and instantly fell in love with all the story behind those beautiful pieces that help local community through their respectful way of using nature to make art.
The Versatile Buriti Palm: A Symbol of Sustainability
The buriti palm (Mauriti flexuosa) is a member of the Arecaceae family and has a broad geographic distribution across the Amazon region, primarily limited to South America. It holds significant economic importance, as nearly every part of the plant is utilized. Its uses range from food to medicinal applications.

Craftsmanship with Buriti Leaves: A Tradition of Art
Buriti leaves yield straw that finds extensive use among local communities for thatching roofs and in various handicrafts, including the crafting of bags, rugs, tablecloths, toys - and jewelry. Furthermore, the stems of buriti leaves are employed in crafting lightweight, durable, and aesthetically pleasing furniture.

The young leaves of the palm produce exceptionally fine fibers, referred to by artisans as "buriti silk."
A large part of the local community sustains itself through the buriti.
Banana Fiber: From Waste to Eco-Friendly Income
The banana fiber plays a similar role but can be found more easily throughout the country. The practice of crafting with banana tree straw has spread throughout the communities, and today it is observed that besides being an income-generating activity, it contributes to the environmental sustainability of these communities.
Before the introduction of craftsmanship, banana tree residue was discarded and accumulated in banana plantations, becoming one of the vectors for the spread of diseases.
A Dentist Turns into an Artisan
Former dentist and full-time mom, I decided to bring these natural treasures to the US and started creating some other pieces by myself, combining my hand skills with the beauty of natural gemstones, gold and sterling silver.
I hope you enjoy Nart's natural, sustainable, eco-friendly, environmental conscious, supportive and stunning bio-jewelry.
